Open Question: Atheists, may I take a moment to both thank you, and ask what your goal would be for all of us?

You look, I once believed in God. It wasn't a voluntary belief, mind you, but more of a conditioned one. You know what I'm talking about. But thanks to the dislodging of that little cork that was caught in the wheel of my brain, I can no longer even wish for some placebo effect when my troubles become too much. At the very least, I could take refuge in my would be temporary insanity, but no. There's no more delusion, just a unhappy realistic, fatalistic reality that I am on my possess; and that I could either toss in the towel, or pick between boredom and sorrow. Yes, thanks to my grand disillusionment, there is no more magic, no more motivation. I ask you, what's more important when you start buckling beneath that heavy world on your shoulders, or what is more important in the wake of some unimaginable loss, what is "real" or what is going to keep you going? So yes, thanks a lot. I shall now go to a pain clinic, receive a write up, and worship my pills every night long. Yes, pills are real aren't they?

Open Question: Freelance Journalism in Africa for a year?

I know what i am about to say is absolutely crazy but hear me out. So basically, for the last year or so i have found that my passion for Global politics has awoken again. I really want to make a huge difference to this world and the only path that is available to me is to become a freelance journalist. The problem is i have no qualifications hence why i have concocted a plan which sounds amazing but a ludicrous in the same sense. I currently work in the civil service in London, but i plan to take a 12 month career break in december. In this career break i intend to embark on a life changing journey through Africa. I want to go at least 12 countries in these 12 months and within these 12 months i want to find stories in each country. I would ideally adore to target any local or national newspapers. I want to go to countries where there is rising political tension e.g Nigeria (Islamist-Christian split, Boko haram, rising oil prices etc) Somalia (Al-shabbab militia and the tensions with Ethiopia and Kenya) Congo, Rwanda, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Sudan. Nine Countries in Africa would be great and then i would adore to go Cambodia, Vietnam and....this is gonna sound crazy.... i would adore to go to the heart of palestine to capture the suffering of the palestinians and show the world the depth of political ineptitude when it comes to finding solutions to World's problems (i mainly blame the US for vetoing sanctions against israel for almost 50 years). I have no experience in Journalism but i like writing, i adore reading every kinds of books, mainly anything to do with historical and political events. I adore reading Newspapers (Guardian, Indrependent) and Magazines such as Economist, New Statesman, National Geo and NewScientist. I am not sure where start with this Journalism thing, but i thought this would be a good idea considering i have no financial constraints and i have no issues in supporting myself during this year. Many people suggest starting out by writing to Local Newspapers, however my only problem with doing freelance journalism in UK is the fact that it may pose problems in relation to my current job in the civil service. I dont want to lose my job by writing an article which may contradict my current Job in the service, hence why i want to take a career break and go abroad. Once i arrive back with every the incredible experience that i gained, i can leave my current job and hopefully find work with a publication in London. I know this sounds mad but every my life i believed that i can change the world in some way and i think this is my best shot. I am willing to sacrifice so much for this adventure and willing to work my arse off in order to receive stories and then receive them published there. I have even done so much research on each of these countries and their political, economic, and social structure and that will continue until December comes. I have also read so much on Journalism including my favourite Journalists, John Pilger, and Christopher Hitchens. I just wanted to ask if you guys if you guys think this method of freelance journalism is a good idea or not, if not please give me suggestions as to how i can go about accomplishing my dream of becoming a journalist. I would really appreciate it. Oh and sorry for writing a shit load. i appreciate your patience while reading this.

I'm discussing it in the loosest term - why I should believe in anything that is not physical or natural. Why should I believe in any of the following: a creator, minds, souls, sin, virtue, miracles, transcendence, the end of the world, judgment, afterlife ... I grew up very religious. I went on to try several religions. If I had ever seen or experienced 0.001 per cent of their claims to be true, I would have believed in them. Can you think of any good reason that would compel a man to have faith in these imaginary constructs?

I am having trouble understanding the following (with the percentages and the "yield" term): "approximately 45% of the world's harvest is harvested with clip-to-length machines... and 35% of this yield is harvested using the clip-to-length method. This means that about 16% of the world's total harvest is obtained using the clip-to-length system." Can someone rephrase this or even explain how the percentages add up........

Open Question: Can anyone tell me what repetitive thought has to do with knowledge?

I can't seem to receive beyond this method of understanding knowledge, and that is: we observe something once represent it, and classify it, then on second observation have the necessary idea to make a valid reflection of what the thing is. I seem to almost receive lost in Kant's world of noumena, and I really don't want to go there anymore. Is that every the observation becomes, a matter of recalling past observation? Writing has never really been my thing (but I am an avid reader), but I was walking home from school, and this awesome idea for a book came to me. it would be called 'I am the Aye-Aye' and it would be about this world where there was only animals and every the animals had a set job when they were born. For example, every the crocodiles would be chefs or every of the deers would be scientists, and the hippos were the billionaires. Then there would be the aye-aye's who would be beggars/slaves or something like that. The main character would be an aye-aye who thought this whole system was unfair, and started a whole rebellion against it. Do you think this would be a good book, would you read it?

Open Question: How do I deal with my terrible depression over the star wars 3d movies and the world ending?

My depression is still not going away due to me not being able to look the relax of the star wars movies in 3d because the world will end on 12/21/12. I think it is really mean that george Lucas decided to release the relax of the star wars movies in 3d after the world will end. What was he thinking?I just saw episode 1 the phantom menace 3d a few days ago and it was amazing. I only wish I could look the relax of them in 3d now but the next one to be released in 3d (attack of the clones) comes out in 3d in 2013. Why?! The end of the world is this year, the 21st of December! I won't be able to look any of the other star wars movies in 3d because they every are suppossed to arrive out after the world already ended. I tried watching my favorite movie ever (also the best movie ever made) episode 3 revenge of the sith but I am unable to watch it without crying. Watching it on my blu Ray just isn't the same as how amazing episode 1 the phantom menace was in 3d. I sob everytime I try to watch revenge of the sith. It just makes my depression so much worse because I know I'll never receive to look it in 3d. Without the star wars 3d movies everything else in life just seems so pointless to me now. I am unable to do/like most of the things I used to anymore (eating, sleeping, showering, homework). I'm 14 about 5'3 and 138 pounds. I want to be more at 110-ish. I am not super fat or anything, but really want to lose the weight by summer. I am going to france and next year am going to a new school for high school and want to be the most confident, glad me that I can be. losing the weight is not truly for the relax of the world but for my self confidence, so I would really appreciate your help. Open Question: Do Republicans really have that short of memory to forget the Iraq war?

We are now hearing Republican candidates trumpeting on about preemptively going to war against Iran because Iran might have a nuke. They are pointing to UN inspectors having difficulty in Iran to proof Iran has a nuke... Seriously? Am I taking crazy pills? Aren't these the same inspectors that declared Iraq has WMD's???? How did that turn out? The fact is U.S generals and defense intelligence officers are every currently in agreement that Iran does not have a nuclear warhead, does not have the means of delivering one in aggression, nor is going to go to war with Israel. The Supreme Leader of Iran(who is actually in control, their insane "President" the media points to is effectively a puppet) may be bad, but he isn't dumb. He knows Israel has 300 nukes and the capability to deploy every of them on his nation. He knows he has no allies in the West, in Russia or in China. He's seen Western powers systematically and easily annihilate every conventional mideastern armies they've faced. He wants to retain power and knows he would lose it the second he becomes an aggressor. He does NOT want to end up like Saddam hiding in a hole and he KNOWS any real act of war would put him in the same position. Even if they receive nuclear weapons they aren't going to use them any more than the USSR has used them against us, or North Korea has used them against South, or Pakistan against India. If Republicans want to claim they can fix the economy they need to realize they can't do so with a new costly war. Let's cease this policy of unchecked aggression and leave nations who pose the U.S. no danger alone so we can focus on the wealth of economic issues we face at home. Iran is going to beat its chest and cause headaches for the West, but it isn't going to start a war that will assure its possess destruction. Let's start acting like a SUPERPOWER and cease being fearful of illiterate desert nations with 2nd world armies. To answer this question you need to: first, pick a society/nation; second, discuss how interactions between this particular society/nation with other cultures/societies/nations contributed to the development of that particular society/nation. (The key is your choice of society/nation and the particular issues you plan to discuss. Limit the number of issues in discussion. Although this class has not discussed later developments, in this essay, you may use information beyond the 17th century.) You may pick any other “real” society/nation except the United States. The specific cultural exchanges and interactions must not arrive exclusively from any single society/nation. 2.Does the slogan of the French Revolution “liberty, equality, fraternity” adequately describe the revolutions and wars of independence of the tardy 18th and early 19th centuries in Europe and the New World? Open Question: Why do American soldiers fight like Cowards?

I am a war historian, and the Second World War is my fav subject, in that war the soviets fought home to home and had to hand battles, while on the western front the U.S. used aerial bombings form a safe high distance tactic. In Vietnam War for example, U.S. forces don't know how to battle the Guerrilla warfare against the VC/NVA fighters who's very expert at it so they cowardly used Agent Orange and this killed over 1 million Vietnamese and caused millions of more babies to be deformed as a result. The USA also dropped more bombs in Vietnam than every combined Axis/Allied bombing raids in WW2. Even now in Iraq and Afghanistan...when a group of fighters start shooting at U.S. forces from a home, instead of going in to raid the position with infantry they call in air strikes which results in killing may many civilians. This nice of cowardly tactic is used by america in Iraq and Afghanistan everyday, No wonder the Iraqi and Afghan civilian death rate is in the hundreds of thousands.

Open Question: Is this good writing?

I've learned that good writing is to the point, engaging and lively, to name a few things. I wrote this paragraph based on this, and was wondering if it can be called "good writing." Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thank you! Nothing is expected of a needy man, because people avoid encountering him. They pretend he does not exist while crossing him in the road, or grin politely and pass by without comment. Frankly it is infuriating, and something must be done about it. The needy lack funds, not common sense; and believe the sensible when they tell you the needy could outsmart you of money and sense. I had a pal not long ago (we stopped speaking after this incident) with whom I played bridge every week. On one occasion, she turned to her maid and asked in a nice voice for some water. The maid returned with a glass, and the game continued. Next, a blanket, a cup of tea and some ice were beckoned for, and those too were brought without question. Being “privileged”, I asked what the ice could be for if a blanket and tea were also asked for. She found nothing odd in her answer, “The human body is so unpredictable. Sometimes I’m freezing my socks off and other times I’m a desert!” I tilted my head without noticing, and replied, “I think you’re referring to the climate of the world, not your body.” Sadly, friendship takes on the feature of immunity and fends off sarcastic remarks, “You’re so silly. I think you could use some water and biscuits yourself. You look famished!” The link between my silliness and lack of nourishment was not an obvious one to me, but I took pity on the maid who was paid to hear to incoherent thought and make out the things to fetch from it. “I’m every right.” I answered with a meek grin, “Why don’t we finish the game, and then I must leave to buy groceries.” She sighed more deeply than normal breath would allow and placed a card on the table, beckoned the maid and said, “Will you receive my pal her coat? Also, take this blanket back, no use overcrowding the lap without a draft!” My embarrassment overtook me then, and as the maid picked up her blanket, I stopped her and remarked, “I’ve noticed that the ignorant are icy and dense in more than one way,” patted the maid on the back and left the room.

Open Question: Lead America Program?

I just got a letter from the program today, which invited me to the Engineering & Technology. Which after Googling the program I've seen that a lot of people say its a scam or others saying its the best program in the world. So can anyone who has been in the program or a meeting tell me what it was like?

Open Question: What do you think of this story idea?

I will admit, it is a religious-fantasy like CS Lewis, Tolkien, Marion Zimmer Bradley and L'Engle. But not too preachy or overly religious like Narnia. It does take place in another world called Neian, a world that exists between time and space, there are many doorways to it from numerous different time periods, held together by the legendary Tree of Life, or World Tree. Neian neutralizes every foreign languages so earthly people would talk a common tongue (but I'm writing it in English). It is also home to mythical creatures, nature spirits, talking animals, mythic gods, demigods and goddesses, and magical islands. It was populated by the earth's missing kids and later Crusades, Saracens, Pirates, Gypsies, Robbers, Pilgrims, Asians, Middle-Easterns and Slavic folk. Neian was made and founded by a giant, magical, shape-shifting Dove called Amnos, along with his mom, Rhodon; a beautiful and compassionate but fierce Unicorn with a bright blue horn and can transform into a thornless rose. They are the highest of the gods. My story chronicles the lives of 15 earthly visitors; 2 adults named Cyprian and Justina, and 3 kids called Simon, Sarah and Jeffrey (unrelated road friends), they are from the 2000s; there are 7 kids from the 1950s called August, Melanie, David, Barbara, Chris, Gideon and Corinne; and 3 kids from the 1900s called Basil, Philip and Lenny. Out of every the 13 kids, Jeffrey is the only one who believed in Neian every his life while the others grew up and became forgetful, skeptical, materialistic, trivial, and luxurious. But unlike Susan Pevensie (who in the Narnia book left Narnia in favor for vanity and parties), the 12 kids came back to Neian to stay and live forever while Jeffrey was left on earth. Jeffrey, in my story, is a combination of the self-righteous Pharisee from the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax-collector, and the unforgiving brother from the Prodigal Son. Jeffrey was too smug, prideful and unforgiving towards his friends (which is what I look as fundamental Christians as) he was blinded by his possess ego that he never spoke to them. I won't make this too Christian-y as well, Amnos to me represents a God with many faces and names that he would not reveal his real identity because life would be too boring if people only knew him as one name. Although he does die and resurrect, there is an older symbol; after his death, winter spreads for 3 months, and when he comes back to life, spring would arrive back. Winter represents death and despair, while Spring is rebirth and new life. Also there are other gods such as Jove, Diana, Hercules, the Dragon King, mom Earth, Pan, Flora, Mountain King and Morpheus. Oh and I don't plan to make it overly-religious, I tend to make it more spiritual and philosophical, and some of it is based on His dark Materials; I liked Phillip Pullman's world, although I thought he was a bit harsh on the religion, but he did say things that were true.

I mean who cares if your Christian, muslim, Athiest, Agnostic, Buddist or whatever we should arrive together for human decency and change the world... once we cease caring that someone has a different view than ourselves then maybe we can work toward a better world and a better United States of America

Open Question: What should I do? I am bored, and I want to play a video game...I am serious too?

Should I play WoW? I want to play a video game but I don't know what to do... also when I play WoW...the world treats me differently...even if they don't know I am playing it... the world just does...everything...I look different...people don't talk to me as much or don't talk to me at every...it's weird... It's like if I play WoW, a curse it put on me... I am being serious too... Should I play? What can I do because I am bored and can't hangout with anyone and by myself... Like one time after downloading WoW, I messaged 7 or 8 kids on facebook, no one responded. They didn't even know I played, or downloaded it. It seems like, people "just know."

Open Question: Website - Surname Distribution on Map?

I'm looking for this one website that I visited once before where you could type in a name and a map of the world would shade according to the relative preponderance of that name in any given country. For example, if I was to search Ivanov, Russia would shade orange and other countries with Ivanov as a common surname would do likewise. The website also gives you an approximation of how many people have that last name in each country. I've been searching for aaaages, but I haven't found it. If anybody knows what website it is that I'm talking about, you'd be a great help!

Open Question: Why do people think educated Black men want non black women?

Please don't answer naming celebrities and saying how they have white women. Please realize that those Black men aren't the only educated Black men in the entire world. My mom is Black and my dad is Black. My dad is a Sociology Professor. My fiance' is Black and he is a computer engineer. You can't possibly think that evey single educated Black man on the earth has a non Black lady. If you do, I feel sorry for you. :) Anyways, Why do you believe that so strongly if you don't even know every Black couples? I'm not mad. I m just making a point lol I'm not mad.
